FROM SIERRA LEONE TO THE GAMBIA: FASHION BECOMES A BRIDGE BETWEEN CULTURES, TALENT AND THE FUTURE
Gambia International Fashion Week 2026: Ismaila Jallow creates new opportunities for young creatives in West Africa. Following the successful casting in Freetown, all eyes are now on Banjul and the fourth edition of the event, taking place from 10 to 17 November.
By Fashion Style Magazine
Fashion can be much more than a garment, a runway or a trend destined to change with the seasons. It can become a universal language, a tool for empowerment and, above all, a tangible opportunity for those who have talent but do not always have the means to turn it into a profession.

This belief lies at the heart of Gambia International Fashion Week (GIFW), a project that looks beyond geographical borders and places a new generation of African creatives at its centre.
Leading this vision is Ismaila Jallow, a Gambian fashion designer who has built part of his professional career in Milan and is now working to create connections between West Africa and the international fashion industry.
His ambition is clear: to turn talent into opportunity, celebrate African cultural identities and provide young people with practical tools to build their future.
FROM FREETOWN TO BANJUL: A NEW DIALOGUE BETWEEN AFRICAN TALENTS
On 11 October 2026, Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, hosted a casting organised by Gambia International Fashion Week in collaboration with Africa Diaspora Fashion Hub Sierra Leone (ADFH-SL).
The initiative brought together aspiring young models and creative professionals, offering them an opportunity to connect with a platform committed to linking the next generation with the international fashion industry.
It was not simply a selection of faces and personalities for the runway, but a meaningful step towards building a professional network between two West African countries.
For many young talents, the greatest obstacle is not a lack of creativity, but the difficulty of accessing training, professional contacts and the opportunities needed to emerge.
The project promoted by Jallow was created precisely to help overcome these barriers.
Founded in 2023, GIFW operates as a non-profit platform supporting Gambian designers, models, stylists and creatives. Africa Diaspora Fashion Hub Sierra Leone, established in Freetown in 2024, shares this vision while maintaining its own identity and a specific focus on talent from Sierra Leone.
Two distinct organisations united by a common goal: to build a bridge between African talent and the international fashion world.

ISMAILA JALLOW: FROM BANJUL TO MILAN, TALENT BECOMES A MISSION
Ismaila Jallow’s personal story also tells, in part, the story of how this project came to life.
Originally from The Gambia, Jallow embarked on a professional journey that took him to Milan, one of the world’s leading fashion capitals, where he developed his career as a designer and established his own fashion brand.
This experience allowed him to gain first-hand knowledge of the fashion industry’s dynamics, while also understanding how challenging it can be for a young African creative to find a place in such a highly competitive sector.
From this awareness came his determination to create opportunities in his home country and, progressively, in other parts of West Africa.
In 2023, he founded Gambia International Fashion Week, envisioning it not simply as a succession of fashion shows, but as a platform capable of generating education, employment, entrepreneurship and international connections.
Fashion thus also becomes a potential alternative to irregular migration: a means through which young people can imagine and build professional futures in their own countries without giving up the opportunity to engage with the wider world.
Today, Jallow works between Milan, Banjul and Freetown, bringing expertise and professional networks from Europe to Africa while promoting African creativity and cultural heritage internationally.

It is a vision in which fashion meets education, cooperation and cultural diplomacy.
18 OCTOBER: THE BANJUL CASTING AS GIFW 2026 TAKES CENTRE STAGE
Following the event in Sierra Leone, attention now turns to The Gambia.
On Sunday, 18 October 2026, the official Gambia International Fashion Week casting will take place at Arch 22 in Banjul, exclusively for candidates who have completed the registration process.
It will be an important opportunity to identify the models, designers and stylists who will take part in the fourth edition of the event.
Gambia International Fashion Week 2026 will be held from 10 to 17 November at the prestigious Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre (OIC) in Bijilo, with the main event scheduled for 15 November.
The week will bring together fashion professionals, Gambian and international designers, models, creatives, media representatives and leading figures from the cultural sector.
The theme chosen for this edition, “Roots to Runway – Luxury Born in Gambia”, captures the essence of the project: drawing on cultural roots to bring Gambian creativity to international runways.

It is an invitation to recognise African heritage not only as a source of aesthetic inspiration, but also as a cultural and economic resource to be celebrated and developed.
LUXURY BEGINS WITH ROOTS: A NEW VISION FOR MADE IN GAMBIA
One of the most significant aspects of the 2026 edition will be its focus on sustainability.
At a time when the fashion industry is being called upon to rethink its relationship with the environment, GIFW has chosen to begin with local resources, craftsmanship and the appreciation of materials.
Recycling and reuse become educational and creative tools, teaching younger generations that even discarded materials can be transformed into new possibilities.
Alongside environmental sustainability, the project aims to strengthen Made in Gambia, supporting local textile production, artisans and the preservation of traditional techniques.
The objective is to build a recognisable identity capable of engaging with international markets without losing its connection to its own history.
From this perspective, luxury does not necessarily mean ostentation, but authenticity, craftsmanship and the cultural value of what is created.
The fourth edition will also introduce an important innovation: for the first time, Gambia International Fashion Week will include a competitive element.

The winning designers will be awarded a study trip to leading fashion universities in Europe and Africa.
This recognition goes beyond the visibility offered by a fashion show, aiming instead to provide tangible opportunities for education and professional development.
FASHION AS A TOOL FOR CHANGE
One message runs through Ismaila Jallow’s entire project: talent alone is not enough if it is not met with opportunity.
It is precisely on this principle that the work of Gambia International Fashion Week and Africa Diaspora Fashion Hub Sierra Leone is founded.
From Freetown to Banjul, through connections with Milan and the international fashion scene, a network is taking shape that aims to offer young Africans something more than a runway: the opportunity to be recognised, trained and supported in building a profession.
Fashion thus becomes a language of dialogue between cultures, but also a tool for economic and social development.
Africa does not need to invent new talent. It needs to create the conditions for the talent it already possesses to emerge.
This is perhaps the most compelling challenge of Gambia International Fashion Week 2026.
An event that looks not only at what will appear on the runway, but above all at the stories, aspirations and possibilities that may emerge behind it.
Because the future of African fashion is not built solely through new collections, but through the people who will have the opportunity to create them.
And from Freetown to Banjul, that future has already begun to take shape.
