More than 100 candidates at the national casting in Banjul, international talent selections, and an organising team working tirelessly behind the scenes. The fourth edition of Gambia International Fashion Week is preparing to celebrate African talent from 10 to 17 November 2026.

BANJUL, THE GAMBIA – Behind the magic of a runway, the dazzling lights, the extraordinary designs and the applause, lies a world of dedication, sacrifice, responsibility and passion. It is a world often invisible to the audience, yet essential to transforming an ambitious vision into a successful international event.
This is the atmosphere surrounding preparations for the fourth edition of Gambia International Fashion Week (GIFW) 2026, scheduled to take place from 10 to 17 November, with its main event on 15 November at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo.
The organising team has entered the final stages of preparation following weeks of intensive work dedicated to discovering and selecting the talents who will take centre stage during the event.
The casting process has been one of the most demanding aspects of this journey. Large numbers of aspiring male and female models have stepped forward, hoping to secure a place on the runway and demonstrate their confidence, personality, presence and ability to bring designers’ creations to life.

Each candidate represents a potential new face of African fashion. Every audition requires careful consideration, professional judgement and attention to detail, ensuring that the final selection reflects the quality and international ambitions of the event.
On 11 October, the selection process reached Freetown, Sierra Leone, through a collaboration with Africa Diaspora Fashion Hub Sierra Leone, further strengthening creative connections across West Africa.
A week later, on 18 October, the official national casting took place at Arch 22 in Banjul, with the support of the National Centre for Arts and Culture.
More than 100 registered candidates participated in a day that went far beyond a traditional modelling audition. The programme included From Talent to Leadership, a masterclass led by Ismaila Jallow, alongside a mini runway presentation featuring designers participating in the Sustainable Gambian Fashion competition.

These initiatives reflect the broader mission of Gambia International Fashion Week: not simply to select models for a prestigious runway, but to create meaningful opportunities for young people seeking a professional future within the fashion industry.
Behind these activities, however, lies an extraordinary organisational effort.
The preparation of an international fashion event requires far more than creativity and ambition. It demands discipline, coordination, resilience and an unwavering commitment from everyone involved.
From managing casting sessions and evaluating candidates to coordinating designers, agencies, volunteers, partners and logistical arrangements, the responsibilities are extensive.
The days are long, the workload is demanding, and every decision matters.
It is an exhausting yet deeply meaningful process, driven by a shared determination to ensure that the event meets the highest possible standards.

At the heart of this ambitious project stands Ismaila Jallow, the Gambian fashion designer based in Milan and Founder and CEO of Gambia International Fashion Week.
Established in 2023, GIFW was created as a non-profit platform dedicated to supporting young Gambian designers, models, stylists and other creative professionals, offering them visibility, training and opportunities to develop careers both locally and internationally.
Jallow’s vision extends beyond the traditional boundaries of fashion. His ambition is to build a platform capable of connecting African creativity with international markets while encouraging young people to recognise the professional possibilities available through their own talents.
In this context, fashion becomes more than an expression of beauty. It becomes a vehicle for cultural identity, education, economic opportunity and sustainable development.
The theme of the 2026 edition, “Roots to Runway – Luxury Born in Gambia,” reflects this philosophy.
It celebrates the country’s cultural heritage, craftsmanship, local materials and creative potential, demonstrating how luxury can emerge from Gambian roots while embracing contemporary design and international standards.
Sustainability will also play a central role in this year’s programme, with particular emphasis on creative recycling, local textile production and the promotion of Made in Gambia.
Through the Sustainable Gambian Fashion competition, winning designers will have the opportunity to undertake educational visits to leading fashion institutions in Europe and Africa, gaining valuable exposure and professional experience.

The international dimension of the event continues to expand through collaborations involving countries such as Italy, Guinea and Jamaica, strengthening cultural exchange and creating new connections between African and global fashion communities.
Yet, as anticipation builds for the runway shows, it is important to recognise the people whose commitment makes this ambitious project possible.
Judges, volunteers, designers, modelling agencies, collaborators, sponsors and institutional partners all contribute to the success of a complex organisation in which teamwork is essential.
The primary objective is clear: to ensure that Gambia International Fashion Week 2026 is delivered to the highest possible standard.
Before international recognition, media attention or the glamour of the runway, there is a fundamental responsibility to create a well-organised, professional and meaningful event for everyone involved.
Achieving this goal requires patience, perseverance and the ability to overcome the inevitable challenges that accompany a production of this scale.
Every casting session, every organisational meeting and every hour spent preparing behind the scenes brings the team one step closer to its shared ambition.
As November approaches, Gambia International Fashion Week is preparing to showcase not only the creativity of designers and the elegance of its selected models, but also the determination of an organisation committed to building opportunities for future generations.
For many young participants, the event represents far more than a moment in the spotlight. It offers the possibility of professional growth, international exposure and a first step towards a career that might otherwise seem beyond reach.
And while the audience will experience the excitement of the runway, the true story of the event will have begun long before the first model takes a step.
It will have begun in the casting rooms, in the countless hours of preparation, in the challenges faced by the organising team and in the collective determination to turn a vision into reality.

Because the success of a Fashion Week does not begin when the lights illuminate the runway. It begins behind the scenes, through the tireless dedication of those who work every day to make it possible.
